The Afghan Hound is an intelligent and independent dog. The Afghan Hound was used to hunt game. Like the other greyhounds, the dog is extremely fast and needs a lot of exercise. In Europe, this breed was introduced around 1900. However, the history of this dog goes back much further. There are drawings depicting a similar dog of more than 4,000 years old. In Afghanistan, the dog was often used as a hunting dog.
An Afghan Hound's height is 64 to 69 centimetres. A male dog will be 69 centimetres and a bitch 64 centimetres. This is based on an average height. The weight of an adult male dog is between 23 and 27 kilograms. The weight of a female is on average 23 kilograms. The life expectancy of an Afghan Hound is 12 to 14 years.
The introduction of the Afghan Hound into Europe was not without risk. Exporting the dog was punishable by death. It is therefore not surprising that the dog was not seen in Europe until 1900. It is said that a British officer dared to smuggle the dog to Europe. However, the dog was a curiosity at the time. It was often exhibited. This is the same today. The dog can still be admired at exhibitions.
It is not surprising. The Afghan Hound has a remarkable appearance. In addition, the dog radiates a certain nobility. However, do not be fooled by its beauty. The dog is muscular and very fast. It has to be. After all, the Afghan Hound is by nature used to the inhospitable landscape of Afghanistan.
This dog breed can be kept as a family dog. They are sweet and loyal, but fairly aloof. The Afghan Hound is a labour-intensive dog, among other things because of the intensive care and the great need for exercise. It is probably not a dog that can be kept by everyone.
The Afghan Hound is independent and devoted. They are, however, picky in their loyalty. When the dog has built a certain bond with a person, they are loyal until their death. Such a bond they do not build with everyone. This does not mean that it is difficult to raise a puppy of this breed. The Afghan Hound listens well, but love and loyalty he gives only to people with whom he has a special bond.
