Black Russian Terrier

The name Black Russian Terrier is a bit misleading. The dog is not a terrier. However, it originated in Russia. The dog is bred to protect and guard. Although the animal is a guard dog, it is not overly aggressive. However, they will not immediately make friends with strangers, which is what you would expect from a watchdog.

This breed was bred by the army. In the 1940s, the so-called Red Star Kennel was established. Here were dogs bred for the army of the Soviet Union. The Black Russian Terrier was also bred here. Its main task: guarding the border and protecting prison guards.

The Black Russian Terrier has a handsome appearance. The animal is fairly large, but is nevertheless relatively fast. The animals have a pleasant character. They are extremely loyal to their boss. His safety comes first. The dogs are brave and quite self-confident. Another good thing about them is that they do not bark at the slightest thing. They only do so when something is wrong.

This breed of dog can cope with young children, but it is wise to keep an adult around. After all, the dog is big and powerful and can scare children. The dog likes to be with 'his' family, being alone is not his cup of tea. The Black Russian Terrier can get along with other dogs, but he is reserved. It is also not advisable to let the animal get along with another dominant dog. That is asking for trouble.

The dog must be well trained from an early age. In the first place, he must learn to obey well. The Black Russian Terrier has a friendly appearance, but it remains a large dog. As the owner, you must be able to control the dog. It is also advisable to socialise the animal well. Positive training where the dog is rewarded for good work works best!
