Of the Swiss mountain dogs, the Entlebucher Sennenhond is the smallest. The name of this dog refers to the valley where the dog was originally bred. The Entlebucher Sennenhond was mainly bred to drive cattle and to keep an eye on the herd when they were grazing. The dog was also used as a watchdog.
One of the most important characteristics of this dog is that it is a very cheerful dog. When the animals were still doing their work as cattle dogs, they were said to do this with great pleasure. It is known that the dog sometimes ran towards a stationary cow, throwing his weight against the animal in the hope that it would move. Mind you: a cow weighs about 25 times as much as the Entlebucher Sennenhond. Even today, the animals are very cheerful and sociable. The nickname of the dog is therefore the laughing dog.
The Entlebucher Sennenhond is full of energy and knows what he wants. When you are going to educate the dog, you have to set clear boundaries for him. The dog is truly a family dog. However, they are also quite protective. The safety of their owner(s) comes first. The dog gets along well with children, but you must be careful with young children. The dog has so much enthusiasm that, although well-intentioned, it can scare children.
Also bear in mind that this dog does not like sitting still. He prefers to be in motion. This does not mean that he needs to be entertained constantly. The dog can do that for itself. He just needs the space to do his own thing.
