Newfoundlander

The Newfoundlander is a dog that has its roots on the other side of the ocean. This breed of dog originated on the island of Newfoundland, the breed was named after this island. Fishermen used this dog for rescuing drowning people. In addition, the dog was also put to work: when bringing in fishing nets and towing boats, the Newfoundlander had to work. It is therefore no wonder that the dog is naturally very strong. The dog is originally a real workhorse.

Newfoundlanders are dogs who are not afraid of water. Since they used to work often with fishermen, they also had to be in the water a lot. Since the water was often cold, the breed had to be able to withstand it. For that reason, the Newfoundlander has a double coat. This is not an advantage for everyone: the grooming of the coat can take a lot of time.

The Newfoundlander has a gentle nature. Historically, the animal has never had a protective or offensive role either. Probably this dog is one of the most friendly dogs that you can find. They are tremendously suited as a family dog. In particular, Newfoundlanders are good with children. They feel responsible for the children, so to speak. In the past Newfoundlanders were also used to keep children warm during long trips through the snow. In addition, the gentle nature of this dog has another advantage: they get along extremely well with other dogs.

Although the dog is naturally calm and non-aggressive, you will still need to raise it. There are two things you need to pay attention to when raising a Newfoundlander. First, you need to teach him good social behavior. By nature, Newfoundlanders are extremely extroverted. This is fun, of course, but it can also become too much of a good thing. The puppy will have to learn his limits. Secondly, the dog must be introduced to the water in a controlled way. Usually this happens when the puppy is about four months old.
