Tornjak

The Tornjak is a breed with a very long history. Documents have been found over 1000 years old where the breed is already described. However, the breed has an even longer history, possibly the dog was already used by the Romans. The Tornjak is a stocky dog with a sturdy build. However, if the animal is healthy, it is in good shape and enormously strong. This breed can easily be used as a watchdog. However, this also has a disadvantage. The animal is very suspicious of people he does not know.

The dog originated in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. He was mainly used to look after livestock. The Tornjak was bred to be a kind of all-round dog, but the emphasis was on herding cattle. However, the dog also had to be able to guard and it didn't have to eat too much. Food could be scarce. With the decrease of shepherds in the region, the dog also disappeared. It was almost extinct. Around 1972, however, breeding programs were set up to save the animal from extinction. The breed is now no longer crossed, so that the species remains pure and is not (further) threatened by hereditary diseases.

The Tornjak loves the family in which it grows up. This is quite typical of dogs Who were originally bred to herd livestock. Their priorities are to protect the livestock and their owners. The animal is therefore incredibly loyal. The Tornjak is reserved towards strangers. He will not become rarely aggressive, but he certainly will not trust them.

This breed of dog loves to work and takes his job incredibly seriously. So the most you teach the dog is by making it as clear as possible what you want from him. The dog will gladly carry out those assignments. Because the dog has quite some difficulty with strangers, it is important as a puppy to regularly bring him into contact with other people and animals.
